Red Hawks Edge Lustre


Froid/Lake’s boys’ basketball team advanced into the divisional title game by edging Lustre Christian, 46-32, in a hard-fought contest at the Eastern C divisional tournament in Sidney on Thursday, March 3.
The Lions played toe-totoe with Froid/Lake during the first half of the semi-final contest and trailed by only a 17-15 margin at intermission. A drive by Kolden Hoversland deadlocked the score at 17-17 to open the third quarter.
The Red Hawks then went ahead to stay when a pair of free throws by Mason Dethman and a three-point play by Javonne Nesbit resulted in a 22-17 lead. A fast-break basket by Brett Stentoft put the margin at 24-17.
Two more free throws by Dethman and a drive by Stentoft increased Froid/Lake’s advantage to 28-17 with 4:16 left in the third quarter.
Lustre battled right back though against the undefeated Red Hawks. A three-pointer by Kaleb Hoversland cut the gap to 28-20. After a free throw by Elijah Lenihan, Jasiah Hambira accounted for a three-point play to close the margin to 28-25 at the end of the quarter.
Froid/Lake opened the fourth quarter with two baskets by Dethman off passes from Nesbit and then a fastbreak hoop by Nesbit for a 34-25 advantage.
After Lustre’s Cayden Klatt connected from threepoint range, the Red Hawks responded with a drive by Stentoft and a free throw by Bode Miller. A drive by Kaleb Hoversland and a 14-footer by Lenihan pulled the Lions to six points, but Stentoft stopped Lustre’s next possession by forcing a steal.
Froid/Lake’s defense held the Lions scoreless the rest of the way for the 14-point victory.
Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Nesbit with 13 and Dethman with 12 points. Tyler Wivholm and Stentoft each added eight points. Also scoring were Ashdyn Hobbs with two, Patton Bighorn with two and Miller with one.
Dethman finished with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Kolden Hoversland led the Lions with 10 points. Also scoring were Klatt with eight, Lenihan with six, Kaleb Hoversland with five and Hambira with three.
The scoring of Klatt and Kolden Hoversland led the Lions to an 11-8 in the first quarter.
Lustre stayed ahead until Ashdyn Hobbs nailed a 16-footer with 2:36 remaining in the half.
