Inflation Hits Knights’ Grocery Bill

The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring fish fry sales at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Culbertson every Friday during March, including March 11, 18 and 25. Organizers told the Community News March 4 that they hope to recoup costs after a shocker of a grocery bill. “We just got our grocery bill,” said Knights volunteer Gregg Labatte. “We just hope we break even.”

Organizers said prices are up and volunteering is down, with grocery prices soaring and the number of volunteers down by about half from previous years. The event was canceled in 2021 due to the pandemic. Attendance appeared strong March 4, with a packed room full of diners.

Mark Ellerkamp said that despite the fundraising challenge, his thoughts are with Ukrainians as they face an invasion from the Russian Federation.

“The Knights of Columbus would like to express their solidarity with the people of Ukraine and their struggle for survival,” said Ellerkamp. He also expressed the group’s solidarity with, “local farmers and ranchers, who are struggling with moisture issues.”

Despite the apparent wash on fundraising, the event will go on as planned with no increase in pricing. Attendees are encouraged to donate a little something extra if they can manage the expense. Meals will be served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the parish hall. Prices run from a flat $15 per plate ($10 for kids under 11). Menu items at the fish fry include Alaskan pollock, roasted potatoes, biscuit, coleslaw and a drink. Dessert is included. All are welcome to attend this annual fundraiser and community event.
