Of the 82 Class C boys’ basketball teams that started the season, the Froid/Lake Red Hawks placed second for the entire state. The Red Hawks fell to Manhattan Christian, 55-35, in the state championship game in Great Falls on Saturday, March 12.

“People will talk about this team for 20 years,” Froid/ Lake Coach Josh Stentoft said after the team’s lone loss of the season. “I’ve coached them since they were young kids since one of them is my son. I told them that I love them. I’m very proud of these boys.”

He is thankful for the amount of fan support that the Red Hawks received during the post season.

“I’m proud of our fans,” the coach said.

The Red Hawks fell behind 8-0 in the title contest and were never able to pull even.

“We came out flat and didn’t shoot the ball well,” Stentoft said.

Froid/Lake’s first points were scored on a three-pointer by Brett Stentoft with 1:51 remaining in the opening quarter.

After Manhattan Christian’s Logan Leep hit a three-pointer, Patton Bighorn scored off a pass from Javonne Nesbit to cut the margin to 11-5 at the end of the period.

The undefeated Eagles started the second quarter with a top-of-the-key shot by Leep and a three-pointer by Tebarek Hill, but Nesbit responded with a three-pointer at the 5:52 mark. The Eagles, however, ran off the next eight points including three-pointers by Seth Amunrud and Mason Venema.

Froid/Lake’s Mason Dethman connected on a threepoint shot with 2:48 left in the half, but the Red Hawks trailed 27-11 at intermission.

The Red Hawks accounted for five of the first eight points of the third quarter on a drive by Dethman and a three-pointer by Bode Miller, but Manhattan Christian held a 38-21 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

A three-point play by Dethman and a three-pointer by Connor Huft were highlights for the Red Hawks early in the fourth quarter.

Dethman and Nesbit led the Red Hawks with eight points each. Also scoring were Miller with five, Huft with three, B. Stentoft with three, Tyler Wivholm with three, Nate Stentoft with three and Bighorn with two.
