Harvest Day Set For Sept. 23 In Poplar
Residents are encouraged to join in celebrating this year’s bounty for the area during Harvest Day 2012 on the Poplar boulevard on Friday, Sept. 23.
Meghan Edwards, VISTA at the Fort Peck Community College’s Extension office, says the event will feature a pop-up farmers’ market, a traditional meal, panels and performances.
Edwards noted that all attendees will receive a free ticket to participate in a prize raffle for a variety of Native made goods. In addition, tickets can be earned by participating or making purchases at market tables.
Activities will begin with a vendors only information session and brunch at noon.
The official opening of the market, craft tables and games will take place at 3 p.m.
“People can come at any time during the afternoon,” Edwards said. “It will be a come and go type of thing.”
A dinner featuring buffalo stew and other traditional dishes will start at 5 p.m. Almost all the ingredients will come from the Fort Peck or other reservations.
“We have several people doing different dishes,” Edwards said. Games for children will include hula-hoops and jumping rope.
An elders’ panel begins at 5:30 p.m. Topics in the question and answer session will include how food sovereignty and access have changed during the years.
A youth panel and performances will start at 6:30 p.m.
The documentary “Gather” will be shown at 8 p.m. The production’s topic is indigenous food sovereignty. A dessert of wojapi and Lakota Foods popcorn will be available.
