The Pastor’s Corner

C orner “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” (Psalm 119:18) After rising from the dead, Jesus met several times with his followers. On the road to Emmaus, while he walked along with two of them, they didn’t know who he was while he taught all about himself from the Scriptures. Only later, when he broke bread with them, were their eyes opened to see him as the Messiah, God’s Anointed One, the Savior (Luke 24:13-35).

Then later that same day, in Jerusalem, Jesus met with a large group of his disciples. And after he opened their eyes to see that he had risen in the flesh, Jesus explained that all of the Scriptures — “the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms” — were fulfilled in him.

God to open our eyes when we haven’t closed them or when we are not blind. I believe as Christians God has given us physical eyes to see in the physical realm and He can give us spiritual eyes to see in the spiritual realm. For us to see and understand Jesus in the Scriptures, we too need our eyes opened. Although the psalmist couldn’t see Jesus or know what we know about Jesus today, the psalmist certainly understood the need for eyes to be opened to understand God’s Word.

Without our eyes opened, God’s Word can seem like a legalistic code to measure how others — and we — fail to live righteously. With our eyes opened, we see in God’s Word the living God who graciously reveals himself to us. We learn how to live the way God intends for us. We ultimately find the “wonderful things” of God’s grace and mercy — above all, in God’s gift of Jesus — and we live in gratitude for all he has done for us.

If God can open our spiritual eyes to see from the inside out the beginning and the end of our situation we will know the right step to take and we will have more confident in him and wont’ have much to worry about. There are many wondrous things in the Word, but the eyes must be open in order to see them. Ephesians 1:18 says “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.”

I believe one of the greatest desires of a believer is to have our spiritual eyes open. I would be a great prayer to ask God to open our spiritual eyes as soon as we give our life to Jesus or as soon as we realize we are spiritually blind so that we may know the hope and the purpose of our calling and experience the riches of the glory of his inheritance.

I pray that you give your life to Jesus if you have not yet done so by confessing your sins to God and believe that He will forgive you of your sins and welcome you into the family and fellowship of other believers.

Prayer: Open our eyes, Lord, so that we may see Jesus and live according to your Word. Amen.
