Wolf Point Girls Might Be Evening The Gender Line On The Mat

The two girls wrestling for Wolf Point High School’s varsity squad are gaining attention and they are 50 percent of the team.

Junior Sofie Rasmussen and freshman Samantha Reed both competed at the Chinook Mixer Friday, Jan. 24, and the Harlem Invitational Saturday, Jan. 25.

The Wolves went 1-4 at Chinook with Rasmussen getting the win.

“The girls did a great job at Chinook,” head coach Scott Vandall said.

Reed, a freshman, had two matches. One was against Morgan Wood, a girl from Highwood who has 12 scholarship offers for college wrestling.

“Samantha was able to get to the third round with Morgan,” Vandall said.

Reed lost to Wood by a tech fall.

Reed wrestled another girl from Harlem. Reed had her in a cradle and went to roll it through and got nervous and let it go and got fought on her back.

“She was doing what she should have up to that point. That was just a young mistake,” Vandall said of the minor mistake.

“Sofie Rasmussen wrestled three matches. She lost two matches to two different Cut Bank boys. She did some good things in those matches. Then, she got to wrestle a girl from Cut Bank who was also a first-year wrestler. Sofie went out and set the pace with her. She wrestled well, made a couple of little mistakes, but battled through them and got her first win. We were all pretty stoked,” Vandall said. “The smile on the face of a kid’s first win is priceless.”

Saturday did not produce any more wins for Wolf Point.

“Samantha had her best match on the year with a boy from Harlem. It went to the third round,” Vandall said. “She was outing the pressure on this boy. She was up by four in the third round.”

The Wolves next wrestle in Malta Saturday, Feb. 1. That will close out the regular season schedule.
