“Hospitals need heart.” That’s the way Liz Mogen, Roosevelt Medical Center’s most recent recipient of the Employee of the Quarter recognition sees it. And, if you ask staff at RMC, she has plenty of heart when it comes to fulfilling her role at RMC. That’s why Mogen, the facility’s business office manager, was selectedd as Employee of the Quarter for the months of July, August and September.

Many staff members said that Mogen is positive in every interaction she has with others and is always willing to assist with projects and activities, often going above-andbeyond to motivate and build moral within the facility.

“Liz is a great mentor to not only her staff, but to all staff. She willingly answers questions and will take the time to help other departments when needed,” said Amy Harling, social services director.

Other staff expressed similar sentiments noting how helpful and friendly Mogen is to patients and visitors.

She also prioritizes serving on planning committees focused on improving RMC and making it an inspiring place to work. Most recently, she has worked with a team of staff working to add elements of fun into the workplace with appreciation activities like popsicles on the patio and hot chocolate bingo. During the pandemic, she also volunteered her department to assist anywhere they were needed. Humbled by this recognition, Mogen said she always tries to give 100 percent to everything she does because she is passionate about making a difference at RMC and in her community.

“I see how important access to healthcare is for this area and I recognize how impactful people can be when they give their heart, energy and support to something. In a small town, nobody is nobody. We all have the potential to make our area a better place to live and I feel everybody should feel a bit of responsibility for that. I know I do and it’s that sense of responsibility that makes me passionate about my job,” Mogen said.

During a typical day, Mogen spends her days collaborating with clinicians on documentation, reviewing charts, claims and remits. She also researches new regulations set by the Center for Medical Services and works to improves workflows. She also educates her team on billing regulations and complex billing and coding issues. Mogen also volunteers as an emergency medical responder for the ambulance service and serves on the utilization review committee, orientation committee and safety committee. She also works closely with the IT department to continually look at new internal software systems for the facility.

She joined the RMC team in September of 2009 as a dietary aide and cook. Two months later, she was transferred to the business office where she worked in accounts payable. She became the business office manager in 2015 and, today, is responsible for managing a team of three staff members.

“Hospital work is hard, but I keep coming back because of the team atmosphere and my coworkers. We all need each other, and this community needs us to be here,” she said.

Mogen is originally from Poplar and lived in South Dakota while growing up. She graduated from Poplar High School and received her associate degree from Kaplan University in business administration with an emphasis in accounting. She has three children and has been married to her husband, Larry, for three years.
