David Hawk
David Hawk, 63, died July 30, 2023, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings.
He was born in Los Angeles, Calif., to Frances “Toni” AllRunner Hawk and John Henry Hawk Sr. His siblings were John Henry Hawk Jr., Antoinette Lorraine Hawk and Amos Roy Hawk.
He started working when he was 15 doing odd jobs. He worked at a foundry with his brother Hank and for NASA for three months. He also worked for a Boys and Girls Club as a counselor. He liked to do whatever popped into his head. He would hitchhike looking for work wherever he was. He loved to travel, especially being the driver for his mom and grandma. He was very helpful to those who needed help. He became involved with AIM and also took part in Leaders of America.
He played fast-pitch softball as a catcher for 19 years and loved going to powwows. He loved the 49’ers and loved to play tackle football in the street. He was an athlete and excelled in every sport that he tried.
His firstborn was a son he never got to know. Next was a daughter, Cheyenne Autumn Hawk, whom he met once or twice while she was young. Daughter Mewissa Rivas Beale was born to Susie Rivas Beale. His third daughter, Davetta Jo Hawk, came after he married Linda Walker, He and Linda later divorced. He then met Debra Gilmore and they had a daughter together: Deann Jeanette Hawk. Later, their relationship ended. David Joe Hawk Jr. was born to him and wife Sonia Martell- Hawk. John Henry Hawk and Leslie Martin Hawk also joined the family.
He got his GED and then his high school diploma. He started attending Fort Peck Community College in the fall of 1991. In 1993, he graduated with an associate of applied science in building trades.
On one of his trips down South, he got into a motorcycle accident and lost his eyesight in his left eye. In 1994, an incident caused him to lose his ability to speak. It took over a year to regain his speech.
He was a carpenter, knew construction, cement, ironwork, roofing, siding, electrical and plumbing. He was certified in lead abatement, asbestos removal and hazardous material. He worked for Fort Peck Housing and also for Fort Peck Community College. He was a bouncer for the VFW and a bingo caller and security guard at the Silver Wolf Casino. He worked at Sidney Sugar and at Alco.
He liked to wake up early, drink his coffee, go outside and watch the sunrise, do crossword puzzles and listen to the radio. He loved to sew, play cards and dice and listen to oldies and country. He liked to watch old movies, play pool, throw darts and throw horseshoes. He liked to workout so he wouldn’t get hurt on the job.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Antoinette Hawk, Kelly Azure and Donna Martell; and brothers, John Henry Hawk and Emerson Melbourne.
He is survived by his wife, Sonia Martell-Hawk; sons, David Joe Hawk Jr., John Henry Hawk, Leslie Hawk and his firstborn son; daughters, Cheyenne Autumn Hawk, Mewissa Rivas Beale, Davetta Hawk Crittenden and Deann Jeanette Hawk; and brother, Amos Hawk.
A wake will be held on Thursday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. at the New Wolf Point Community Hall. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. at the New Wolf Point Community Hall. Interment will be at King Memorial Cemetery.
