Red Hawks Win Monday’s Challenge Game

The Froid/Lake girls’ basketball team came a game away from the state tournament when the Red Hawks fell by a 47-39 final against MonDak in Plentywood on Monday night, March 2.

Froid/Lake earned third place at the Eastern C divisional tournament and ended the season with a 19-7 record.

Against MonDak in the challenge game, the Red Hawks trailed by a 37-28 margin entering the final quarter. Froid/Lake fought back to 37-33 on a drive by Sydney Labatte and a three-pointer by Baylee Davidson to open the fourth period.

After MonDak’s Brynn Folvag scored, a drive by Sydney Dethman cut the margin to 39-35 midway into the final quarter.

Five straight points by Folvag and a drive by Kiarra Brunelle put the Thunder up 46-37. A basket by Carolyne Christoffersen closed the gap to 46-39 with 46 seconds left, but the Red Hawks couldn’t get any closer.

Dethman finished with 14 points to lead the Red Hawks. Also scoring were Daivdson with nine, Labatte with eight, Desani Nesbit with four and Christoffersen with four.

Leading the Thunder were Jenna Rust with 18 and Folvag with 13 points.

The game was deadlocked at 11-11 after the first quarter. The Thunder scored nine straight points in the second quarter to gain a 22-15 halftime advantage.

A three-point play by Dethman pulled the Red Hawks to 25-24 in the third quarter. The Thunder responded with the next six points, including five points by Rust, and led by a 37-28 margin at the end of the quarter.
