School in Lustre began on Wednesday, Aug. 23. There are 36 students attending Lustre Christian High School and 49 students enrolled in the Lustre Grade School.
Shelly Keller, clerk of the LGS, expressed deep gratitude for the women volunteering their services to cook for the schools’ lunch program for at least six weeks so that the regular cook, Tori Bell, can stay at the side of her daughter, McKenna, as she undergoes cancer treatments. The volunteers are Lisa Neufeld, Diane Unrau and Gretchen Schiller.
Last week, we learned about LCHS history teacher, Kendall Ross. This week we focus on Emily Eggar, LCHS’ new math teacher. Eggar grew up at Wolf Point and graduated from LCHS in 2019. She graduated from York University in York, Neb., with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry, a bachelor of science degree in biology and a minor in mathematics. She is the daughter of Shawn and Christine Eggar.
When asked why she chose Lustre, she replied “When I was in college, I had to choose how I was going to live in respect to the world views I saw. Facing difficulties there helped me learn how to own my faith and live it out. I learned of the opening to teach math when Mr. Marasco, my former math teacher, asked me if I’d consider teaching math at LCHS so he could teach the music classes. When God closes doors, He opened a window.”
She teaches five math classes: the three required for matriculation: Algebra I and II and Geometry; and trigonometry, calculus and a new course this year, consumer math. It is a practical course on money managing, tax preparation and financing.
Two dorm students are playing football with the Wolf Point team this semester. They are returning students senior Ifeanyichukwu (Ify) Aniobi and sophomore Chukwuemeka (Emeka) Aniobi. Mason Hilkemann also chose to play, but he broke his arm in football practice. The Aniobi brothers came to Lustre from Lagos, Nigeria.
The staff of the Lustre Grade School includes John DuBose, supervising teacher; Jeanne Matthyser, grades 7-8; Ligia Earley, grades 5-6; Prince Agbisit, grades 3-4; Kathleen Damboise, kindergarten – grade 2; LaVonne Toews, playground supervisor; Ashleigh Byers, bus driver; Kimberly Klatt, Debbie Lenihan and Linette Uchtmann, teachers’ aides; and Shelly Keller, clerk.
A daughter, Charlotte, was born to Matthew and Amanda Unrau of Madison, Wis., on June 30. She is the granddaughter of Gerry and Bonnie Unrau. Matt is an alumni of LCHS in 2005.
Last Sunday evening, Jim Wiens presented the work he and his family are doing in Russia at the Lustre EMB Church, including insights into many aspects of their lives and musical selections of his teenage children. Jim Wiens talked of the qualities needed when working to make a difference for people in upheaval, trauma and alcoholism. He said to be prepared, obedient, innovative, wise and courageous. He spoke of the importance of scriptures like Psalms 91 and Romans 12:2 in the turmoil of our times. “Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.”
