Wolves Compete At Columbus Meet

Wolf Point’s wrestlers were in Columbus during the weekend to open up the new year.

During a mixer on Friday, Kia Villavuz went 0-2, Joli Beston was 2-0, Mike Bell went 1-1, Camden Doorneck was 0-2, Xander Hoffman went 0-1, Jesse Reed was 2-0 and Reiley Rees was 1-0.

“We wrestled tough. We all did good things,” Wolf Point Coach Scott Vandall said. “We made small adjustments over break and did what we worked on. Was very happy with how they wrested. It was a long break and much needed.”

On Saturday, the Wolves wrestled in a tournament in Columbus. “Again, I was very happy with the results,” Vandall said.

Villavuz went 0-2 in exhibitions. She had to wrestle up and gave up almost 10 pounds and she did well. She gave everything she could.

Hoffman and Doorneck each went 0-2. “They wrestled hard. They were in their matches, just made a couple little mistakes that cost them.”

Rees went 1-2 in his bracket. “Riley had some great matches. He won a thriller on double overtime. He was in the last two matches. I’m very happy with him,” Vandall said.

Bell won the 205-pound bracket. “Mike did very well. Mike is progressing well. He is gaining ground each week,” Vandall said.

Jesse Reed also won his bracket at 145 pounds. “Jesse has really turned a corner these last couple of weeks. He is wrestling very well. He will be making some noise for us,” Vandall said.

Beston also won her bracket. “She.is getting back into the groove. She wrestled well all weekend,” Vandall said. “We went into break with some issue that all the coaches on staff saw and we went to work fixing things on the break. I have to hand it to coach Martinez and coach Pendleton. They were not afraid to say we are struggling in these areas. We came up with some plans and made solutions. It really showed. I’m very happy to have these two on staff, they put in a lot of work.”

The Wolves will be on the road this weekend to Fairfield for a mixer on Thursday and the Choteau Classic on Friday and Saturday.
