Indians Earn Third At Divisional
Poplar’s girls’ basketball squad had its impressive season come to an end at a challenge game held in Glasgow on Monday, March 4.
The Indians fell to Chinook, 62-39, in the Northern B divisional challenge game to decide a state berth. Poplar placed third at the tournament.
Poplar played well in the first quarter against Chinook as a drive by Cammie Martell and a three-point shot by Bailey Dupree finished the opening quarter at 11-6.
A free throw by Braelyn Nordwick and a basket by Kessee Erickson off a pass from Mattie Falls Down increased the Indians’ lead to 14-6 with 6:39 left in the second period.
Chinook, however, scored the next six points to pull to 14-12. After a baseline shot by Falls Down, the Sugarbeeters struck for the final eight points of the half for a 20-16 advantage.
Poplar fell behind by a 35-18 margin when Chinook scored 15 of the first 17 points of the third quarter. Hallie Neibauer scored six and Alexus Seymour had five points during the streak.
The Indians responded with eight of the next 10 points to climb back into the contest. The scoring of Rikki Belton, Cammie Martell, EmmaRae Matrell and Falls Down cut the margin to 3726.
Chinook led 39-27 at the end of the third quarter and scored eight of the first nine points of the fourth period including three-pointers by Neibauer and Jenna Liddle.
Falls Down and E. Martell led Poplar with eight points each. C. Martell and Erickson added seven points each. Also scoring were Nordwick with three, Belton with two, Dupree with three and Sadee Archambeault with one point.
Neibauer finished with 36 points.
