Keith Erickson is excited that he has been selected as the new superintendent of schools in Poplar. He has agreed to a two-year contract in the position.

“I vow to do the best I can as the superintendent of schools,” Erickson said.

He noted that his primary concern will always be what’s best for the students. “Nothing less or nothing more than putting the kids first,” Erickson said of his philosophy.

Erickson graduated from Poplar High School in 1994. He then earned his teaching degree from Montana State University in Billings in 1999. He went on to earn his masters degree and doctorate degree from MSU Bozeman, both in education leadership.

After teaching at the middle school level in Poplar for eight years, he has worked in the school’s administration for the last 17 years. Titles have included assistant high school principal, middle school principal, athletic director and elementary assistant principal. He has been the school district’s assistant superintendent for the last two years.

Erickson is proud to be the school district’s first superintendent from Poplar. He says it wasn’t always a road that he planned was going to occur.

“I think if you had told me 25 years ago, I probably would have laughed you out the door,” Erickson joked about being superintendent.

He hopes his success can provide hope and inspiration to current students. He was one of Poplar’s top rebounders and scorers on the basketball court, but he’d rather be remembered for his achievements as an educator.

“I do my best for the community, kids and staff. My heart and soul is in this school,” Erickson said.

As far as his leadership style, Erickson likes to work collaboratively with the community, staff and students. He also believes in being transparent.

“I enjoy figuring out issues and finding solutions,” Erickson said. “I will not always be right, but I always believe in kids first.”
