What is a Mill Levy?

What is a Mill Levy? What is a Mill Levy?

A mill levy is a property tax expressed in mills, where one mill is equal to one dollar per $1,000 of assessed property value. It is used by local governments (in this case, Roosevelt County) and other jurisdictions to raise revenue for covering annual expenses. This is NOT an increase in current taxes.

The taxing entity determines the amount of dollars, based on its budget request to the county commissioners.

Roosevelt County is asking for a continuation of 7 mills, or approximately $228.618.93 per year, to maintain the current number of Sheriff Deputies and for the general operation of the Sheriff’s Office beginning in the 2024-2025 budget year. The fiscal impact on a home having a market value of $100,000 is estimated at $9.45, on a home valued at $300,000 would be approximately $28.35 and on a home valued at $600,000 would be approximately $56.70 each year of the levy. Please vote in favor of continuing the levy of 7 mills to cover these expenses and continue the Public Safety staff and operations of the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office.
