Johnson Sisters Earn Honors During Fair
When it came to showmanship, the Johnson sisters from Froid were a force during livestock judging at the Roosevelt County Fair this year.
Lilly Johnson, who is entering her junior year in Froid, earned the title for best steer showmanship in the senior division. Ally Johnson, who is starting her freshman year in school, captured the same honor in the junior division. In addition, they came away with grand champion awards during the round-robin showmanship competition.
The daughters of AJ and Kayla Johnson said they alternate chores to help each other out. They noted their parents provide great support. Lilly was the grand champion for market steers at last year’s county fair.
Lilly used her heifer for the showmanship competition. “She behaves better,” she explained.
Her heifer’s name is Adalida. Ally’s steer Wilson is a black angus that weighs 1,523 pounds. Breeder of Wilson was the Steppler Ranch.
Adalida was obtained through the NILE merit program because of Lilly’s winning application.
“It’s a program to help young kids build their herd,” she said.
Selected recipients that are awarded a heifer are chosen based on merit, future goals and ability to care for the animal. Lilly will show Adalida during the NILE event in October.
“I get to meet a lot of people in the industry,” Lilly said. “It’s a great program to be a part of.”
When asked about her goals, Lilly answered, “To keep doing well and help the younger kids. It’s no fun it you don’t like what you’re doing.”
Lilly is the current vice president and Ally is a member of Froid’s FFA.
