Cowboys Roll To Opening Victory In Forsyth
The Culbertson Cowboys enjoyed an excellent opening game as they crushed Forsyth, 54-16, on Saturday, Aug. 31.
“We played a pretty good game in all three phases,” Coach Brian Manning said.
Culbertson scored on its first drive of the season as a 21-yard pass from Bridger Salvevold to Ian Snyder produced a touchdown. Josue Mena kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
After a 47-yard punt return by Reese Moon, Salvevold scored from two yards out for the game’s second touchdown. Mena’s kick increased the margin to 14-0.
Salvevold accounted for the final two touchdowns of the opening quarter on runs of 65 and 27 yards for a 26-0 advantage.
After a 19-yard reception by Snyder to keep the drive alive, the Cowboys scored on a seven-yard dash by Moon early in the second quarter. Mena kicked the conversion for a 33-0 lead.
Salvevold broke loose on a 10-yard run to put the Cowboys ahead 40-0 at the half.
The Cowboys’ first touchdown of the second half came on a 62-yard kickoff return by Salvevold. Mena added the kick after the touchdown.
Culbertson’s final touchdown was scored by Plenny Williams on a 42-yard run. Mauricio Mena kicked the conversion for a 54-16 conference victory.
Defensive standouts for the Cowboys included Gavin Deen, Mark Kirkaldie and Moon. Dawson Bergum accounted for a forced fumble.
“I was happy how they performed,” Manning said of the team. “It was a solid game on all fronts.”
