Wolf Point Falls In Homecoming Game Against Strong Malta Team
The Wolf Point Wolves found the going tough against a powerhouse Malta team and lost their homecoming football game by a 46-8 final on Friday, Oct. 11.
The Mustangs started the game with fireworks as Dawson Hammond returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. Landon Retan kicked the conversion for a 7-0 margin.
Malta advanced into scoring position on its first offensive possession when a bubble screen pass from Stockton Oxarart to Hammond netted 33 yards. Sam Boysun made a touchdown-saving tackle at the Wolf Point 16.
The Mustangs went on to score when Oxarart connected with Treyton Wilke over the middle for a 24-yard touchdown pass.
Malta was inside the Wolf Point 20 again later in the first quarter, but a tackle for loss by Mike Bell and a pass defended by Jayden Dominique ended that threat.
The Mustangs reached the end zone on the first play of the second quarter when a screen pass from Oxarart to Mason Simanton resulted in a nine-yard touchdown play. Retan’s kick increased the margin to 20-0.
After Malta’s defense stopped the Wolves, the Mustangs struck again on a 50-yard throw from Oxarart to Hammond with 9:58 left in the half.
After the Mustangs drove inside the Wolf Point 10 later in the half, sacks by Zandon Calder and Jesse Reed pushed Malta back to the 27. On third down, Wilke broke loose for a touchdown run. Retan’s kick put the margin at 34-0 with 5:32 remaining in the half.
Malta’s final touchdown of the half came on a 23-yard pass from Oxarart to Trooper Stiles with 2:01 remaining in the half.
The Mustangs added a touchdown in the third quarter when Wilke intercepted a pass and raced 36 yards to the end zone for a 46-0 lead.
After an interception by Boysun, the Wolves started a scoring drive on the Malta 46. Runs by Kasey Reed and J. Reed moved the ball deep inside Malta territory. A nice run by Jacob White produced a first down at the three.
K. Reed then ran for the touchdown with 4:50 remaining. The Wolves used a trick play with Dominique throwing to White for the conversion to cut the margin to 46-8.
The Wolves will play at Conrad on Friday, Oct. 18.
