Cowgirls Defeat Plentywood Squad
The Culbertson Cowgirls came from behind to upset Plentywood during league volleyball play on Thursday, Oct. 24.
The Cowgirls won by a 22-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-9, final.
“The girls all played together and moved well,” Culbertson Coach Tiffany Nielsen said. “We started off pretty slow in the first two games, but bounced back in the end of those. They really came together in the third and kept rising from there.”
After dropping the first two sets, Culbertson gained a 22-14 lead in the third set as a kill by Jazzmin Fugere and an ace by Leandra Perkins highlighted the streak. Ivy Colvin served an ace to put the Cowgirls up 24-15. A kill by Mariana Burciaga ended the set.
The fourth set was even at 21-21, but Plentywood took a 23-21 lead on a block by Keeley Simonson.
The Cowgirls accounted for the last four points of the set including three points on Ayden Ator’s service. Emma Berwick had a block and Fugere scored a kill during the run.
Culbertson jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the fifth set behind kills by Perkins and Berwick along with an ace by Ator. After the Wildcats tied the set at 5-5, Culbertson accounted for the next eight points. Scoring kills were Perkins, Fugere and Serenity Wilbanks. Berwick served a pair of aces and Ator had a tip. Plentywood got as close as 14-9, but the Cowgirls held on for the victory.
