Area Students Learn About Red Ribbon Week
Area students recognized Red Ribbon Week with various activities last week.
Students at Frontier Elementary School heard a presentation from Marianne Zilkoski early in the week.
Zilkoski urged students to live a substance-free lifestyle.
She noted that students only should take pills that are given to them from their parents.
Each of the students received a Red Ribbon Week ribbon to wear throughout the week.
Northside Elementary School students completed a fun run around the school on Thursday afternoon.
Wolf Point is planning dress-up days throughout the week of Oct. 28-31.
The week will include Pajama Day, “Don’t Get Caught Sleeping. Stand up to bullying” on Monday, Backwards Day, “Students turn their backs on bullies,” on Tuesday, Crazy Hair and Socks Day, “From head to toe, students are drug free,” on Wednesday, and RED Day, “RED’y to make healthy choices for life” on Thursday.
Dress-up days in Poplar last week included “Our dreams are too big for drugs,” “We are RED’y to be drug free,” “I elect to be drug free,” “Be a hero, stay drug free” and “Our school chooses to be drug free.”
One of the annual highlights in the area is the Red Ribbon Run. Runners from Nashua, Frazer, Wolf Point, Poplar and Brockton took part in the event along Highway 2 on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s largest and longest running drug use prevention campaign. Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America.
