WPCO Approves Funds For Video, Community Feed

The Wolf Point Community Organization approved $5,000 for a video project and $10,000 for a community meal during its monthly meeting held on Monday, Oct. 28.

The video project is being coordinated by Dr. Joseph McGeshick. The video will provide an update of Native American traditional stories being put together on film with Fort Peck Community College.

McGeshick said at a recent public meeting that the first Assiniboine film features the story of Rocky Point regarding the smallpox epidemic in the 1830s. The project has featured Scott Smoker as choreographer and Mike Turcotte as narrator. The group is now called Fort Peck Reservation Stories and Film.

The project will involve students throughout the Fort Peck Reservation. It is expected to be done in June 2025.

WPCO also approved $10,000 for a community feed to be scheduled for Nov. 9. The plan is for the feed to include an Indian taco buffet.

WPCO chair Holly Hamilton reported that Chris Dschaak came to a committee meeting to discuss funding for the Wolf Point Baseball Association. WPCO provided $10,000 for the program last season. Funds are needed for field maintenance along with travel expenses.

In the housing authority report, it was noted that policies are being worked on. A memorandum of understanding involving the board of community housing authority and the board of Fort Peck Tribes’ animal control is being developed. Wolf Point council member Dean Mahlum urged people to come to the next public hearing regarding Town Pump’s proposal to purchase Triangle Park from the city.

“We haven’t moved forward or made any decisions,” Mahlum said.

If the park is sold, the funds need to be used to develop another park. Mahlum mentioned the skating park on Fifth and Fairweather could be made into a very nice park if parties work together.
