Feed the Homeless Offered For Thanksgiving

Debra Boyd of Poplar along with other volunteers are demonstrating the real meaning of Thanksgiving again this November.

Last year, the Feed the Homeless Thanksgiving Dinner attracted more than 200 people. This year’s second annual dinner is scheduled for Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 28, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Poplar Cultural Center.

“It was something that was on my heart for a while,” Boyd explained. “I see so many street people that have nowhere to go and families who can’t afford it.”

She admits that she was surprised by the large turnout last year, but the group was well prepared for the meal. “Last year, we had plenty,” Boyd said of the food amount. “We had quite a few donations.”

The dinner has been moved to a larger facility because additional room was required.

She said the homeless people attending were extremely thankful. “It brought tears to my eyes. It made me cry,” Boyd said.

Volunteers included the Rushing Wind ministry group from Ronan. They even provided some pies as a donation. “They will be back this year,” she said.

Food items still needed, if individuals wish to donate, include stuffing, hams, 10-pound bags of potatoes, pies and water.

“We have seven turkeys already. We each take one or two and cook them,” she said. “We would like some hams if possible.”
