A large and hungry crowd gathered in the Poplar Cultural Center on Thanksgiving for the second annual Feed the Homeless Thanksgiving Dinner.

“The whole place was full,” organizer Debra Boyd said.

She said the group of volunteers started preparations at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, by setting up tables, putting turkeys in cookers, hams in ovens and pealing potatoes. At 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, they met at the center to prepare the fullcourse meal. The event officially was conducted from noon to 4 p.m. More than 100 people were fed by 1:30 p.m.

“They were coming in at 10, sitting in the bleachers and waiting to get started,” Boyd said.

Donations included nine turkeys, 14 hams, four cases of water, six large cans of corn, 100 pounds of potatoes, 25 dozen dinner rolls and 15 pies.

“I’m happy to do it for my community,” Boyd said. “I saw the need and wanted to help.”

Volunteers included those from the Good Heart Ministry of Polson.

“They were really thankful for the dinners,” Tash Williams, project director for Good Heart Ministry, said of the attendees’ responses. “A lot said they couldn’t afford dinner.”

Williams said the people also expressed thanks for the warmth of the building and their families.

“They were also thankful to be alive and for their faith,” Williams said.

Williams explained that Good Heart Ministry is called to reach out to Native Americans throughout Montana and has a focus of proclaiming in gospel of Jesus Christ. The group’s pastor is J.R. Boyd, who is the brother of Debra Boyd. The ministry plans to attend again next year for the third annual Feed the Homeless Thanksgiving Dinner.
