Wolf Point Boys Drop Opening Home Contest Against Sidney
Wolf Point’s boys’ basketball squad put together a solid first quarter, but the Wolves fell at home against Sidney by a 64-44 final on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
Zandon Calder, a 6-5 sophomore, led the Wolves to a quick 4-2 lead in the contest. The Wolves increased the margin to 8-5 on a drive by Richard Campbell and a hoop by Calder off an assist from Jett Azure.
A three-point play by Sean Hamilton and a three-point shot by Rebel Mays put Wolf Point ahead 16-11 during the quarter’s final minute. A basket off a rebound by Sidney’s Carter Heggem cut the gap to 16-13, but the quarter ended on a strong Wolf Point defensive play when Azure took a charge.
The Eagles, however, struck for the first 11 points of the second quarter to gain a 24-16 advantage. Gradin Sukut scored five of those points for Sidney.
Mays connected on a three-pointer to end Sidney’s streak, but the Eagles moved out to a 32-19 lead on points by Tanner Tiesen and Cy Faulhaber.
Joseph Williamson, an eighth-grader, provided some instant offense for the Wolves off the bench as he hit a 14-footer and then a three-pointer at the buzzer to pull the Wolves to 32-24.
A basket off a rebound by Calder got Wolf Point off to a good start in the third quarter, but Sidney scored the next seven points. Another basket by Calder and a shot by Campbell off a great pass from Calder closed the margin to 39-30 midway into the quarter.
Sidney went on to lead by a 48-36 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
The scoring of Calder kept the Wolves close at 52-42 with 5:50 left in the non-conference game, but the Eagles pulled away with 12 of the final 14 points. Calder led the Wolves with 18 points. Campbell finished with eight points.
Also scoring for Wolf Point were Mays with six, Williamson with five, Hamilton with three, Azure with two and Cole Holen with two.
Leading Sidney were Cy Faulhaber with 21 points, Tiesen with 12, Carter Heggem with 11 and Sukut with 10 points.
