Cowboys Earn Win Over Red Hawks

A strong start to the second half highlighted Culbertson’s 53-37 boys’ basketball win over Froid/Lake on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Ahead by a 25-19 halftime margin, the Cowboys opened the second half with 14 straight points. Two baskets by Mark Kirkaldie, including one off an assist from Dawson Bergum, started the streak.

A basket inside by Gavin Deen and a fastbreak drive by Bridger Salvevold put the margin at 14 points. Baskets by Deen and Brooks Solem along with a pair of free throws by Kirkaldie increased the gap to 39-19.

The Red Hawks got back into the game by striking for the last 10 points of the quarter. Two three-pointers by Aaron Orozco and another one by Rylan Young pulled Froid/Lake to 39-29.

The Cowboys responded with six of the first seven points of the fourth period on a basket by Deen off a long pass from Salvevold, a 15-footer by Salvevold and a hoop by Bergum.

Young accounted for five points to bring the Red Hawks back to 47-35. Two free throws by Young cut the margin to 49-37 with 3:24 left, but Salvevold scored the game’s final four points.

Salvevold finished with 19 points. Kirkaldie and Deen added 10 points each.

Also scoring for Culbertson were Solem with seven, Plenny Williams with five and Bergum with two.

Young accounted for 22 of Froid/Lake’s points.

Rounding out the scoring were A. Orozco with six, Joseph Robertson with four, Carson Kelm with three, Cody Olson with two.
