Bainville Girls Defeat Froid/Lake, 50-42
The Bainville Bulldogs put together a 14-0 run during the first half and then held off Froid/Lake, 50-42, during District 2C girls’ basketball play on Saturday, Jan. 11.
A baseline shot by Lila Butikofer and a pair of free throws by Miah Pippenger resulted in an early 8-4 lead for the Bulldogs, but Froid/ Lake’s Mara Salvevold accounted for a three-point play to close the margin to 8-7 with 3:28 left in the opening quarter.
The Bulldogs then started their 14-0 run with the final seven points of the first period on three points by Elsie Wilson and four points by Addison Hansen for a 15-7 advantage.
Bainville displayed excellent ball movement in the second quarter as the Bulldogs ran off seven straight points on a three-point play by Pippenger and two baskets by Hansen, including one off a nice pass from Chandi Johnson, for a 22-7 margin.
Bainville still led by 15 points until Salvevold hit a three-pointer with 2:55 left in the half. After a drive by Bainville’s Hailey Berwick, Addison Elvsaas connected on a three-pointer to pull the Red Hawks to 28-17.
The Red Hawks switched to a zone defense and scored the next three points on a drive by Salvevold and a free throw by Brooklynn Nordwick. An inside shot by Hansen put the Bulldogs up 30-20 to end the half.
Froid/Lake opened the third quarter with the first seven points on a three-pointer by Salvevold, a basket off a rebound by Avery Johnson and a drive by B. Nordwick to cut the margin to 30-27.
H. Berwick responded with six straight points as the junior hit two baskets and a pair of free throws. Wilson followed with a pullup jumper for a 38-27 lead. A hoop after a rebound by Tally Berwick increased the gap to 40-27 with 2:53 left in the quarter.
Bainville led 42-28 at the end of the third quarter and then opened the fourth period with a basket by Pippenger off a pass from Johnson. Six straight points by Salvevold and a free throw by Isabelle Nordwick cut the gap to 44-35 with four minutes to play.
Wilson accounted for six of the game’s next eight points to give the Bulldogs a more comfortable 50-37 lead with under two minutes remaining.
Bainville’s top scorers were H. Berwick with 12, Wilson with 11 and Hansen with 10 points. Also scoring were Pippenger with seven, Butikofer with six, T. Berwick with two and Johnson with two.
Salvevold accounted for 23 of Froid/Lake’s points. Rounding out the scoring were B. Nordwick with seven, I. Nordwick with six, Elvsaas with three, Johnson with two and Joelle Davidson with one.
