More Cold Weather Coming This Weekend

Very cold temperatures moved in across northeast Montana Jan. 11, with wind chills dropping below zero for most of the region. The coldest readings in the state were in the far northeast corner, said National Weather Service meteorologists in Glasgow.

The coldest temperatures recorded during the initial cold snap were Jan. 12-13 in Sheridan County. Wind chills of -29 were recorded Jan. 12 in Plentywood, Westby and other areas in the far northeast. Wolf Point and Culbertson saw highs of -19 and -21 degrees respectively.

Moving into next week, NWSG is expecting frigid readings starting Sunday. Meteorologists are expecting a deep Arctic airmass to move in Jan. 19, giving some locations strong probabilities of -20 degree temperatures.

The lowest temps are expected near the northern border. Highs of 0 degrees are expected on Jan. 19 and 20. Above normal precipitation is expected next week generally.

NWSG meteorologist Grant Hicks said at press time that area residents should, “Stay warm and keep up with any advisories that go out.”

He added that people should, “limit time outside, as well as exposed skin” during the coldest weather.
