Improvements and increased enthusiasm for education continues being achieved at Frazer School, said superintendent Dr. Sarah Ruff.

She notes that on each school day, starting at 8 a.m., a community circle takes place that includes smudging, singing and preparations for the day. Ruff encourages community members to come and participate in the activity.

She reports that Frazer’s teachers are working on a literacy project, LETRS, so staff members are well versed in the science of reading.

Ruff noted that school has integrated culture in basic learning classes including science and history. For example, a science class used a smokehouse to cured buffalo meat for students and community members. The art and Native American studies classes have focused on learning more about the Sioux and Assiniboine cultures.

“We are very community and cultural focuses,” Ruff said.

Enrollment keeps growing as one new student came prior to the holiday break and two more arrived at the school last week. Ruff feels part of the attraction is the cultural work being performed in Frazer.

Frazer students have also been performing well in extra-curricular activities. Speech and drama members Takao Old Person and Marick Old Person have excelled at meets.

“For the first time, we hosted a meet,” Ruff said. “We are very proud of that program.”

Ruff said basketball teams have also been performing well during the season.
