Poplar Girls Edge Wolf Point, 56-50, in District 2B Action

 

The Poplar Indians fought off Wolf Point, 56-50, in girls’ basketball action held in Poplar on Thursday, Jan. 9.

The Indians entered the fourth quarter with a 41-37 lead and scored five of the first seven points of the fourth quarter on a drive by Braelyn Nordwick and a three-pointer by Journey Gourneau.

Wolf Point pulled to 46-41 on an inside shot by Karmyn Plain Feather, but the Indians responded with a fast-break hoop by Saydee Archambeault off a pass from Mattie Ayers with 5:54 remaining.

The Wolves kept battling though as Caitlyn Wilson scored a basket for a 48-43 game. After a free throw by Ayers, Wolf Point fought back to 49-48 on a three-pointer by Brenna Blount and an inside shot by MacKenzie Jackson.

Poplar emerged in the final minutes with a three-pointer by Avers producing a 5248 game with 1:25 left. After Nordwick blocked a shot, Bailey Dupree scored off an assist from Gourneau to put the Indians up 54-48 with only 33 seconds remaining in the league contest.

Wilson, who enjoyed her best game as a Wolf Point player, hit a pull-up jumper, but Dupree connected on two free throws with 10 seconds left for the 56-50 final.

Cammie Martell led the Indians with 15 points. Nordwick and Ayers added 11 points each.

Also scoring for Poplar were Gourneau with six, Dupree with five, Toni Brown with four, Makenzie Crawford with two and Saydee Archambault with two.

Wilson finished with 12 points and Kashlyn Speak Thunder scored 10 points for the Wolves. Rounding out the scoring were Blount with six, Plain Feather with five, Ameliya Doney with five, Mattie Azure with four, Jackson with four, Keeley Blount-Henderson with two and Marley Moran with two.

The Indians ended the first quarter on a good note when Martell fired in a three-pointer for a 12-8 lead.

Poplar then reeled off the first seven points of the second period on five points by Nordwick and a pull-up jumper by Martell for a 19-8 advantage.

A basket at the buzzer by Brown put Poplar ahead 27-19 at intermission.

Two straight hoops by Speak Thunder closed the gap to 27-23 to start the third quarter. A three-point play by Martell and a three-point shot by Ayers highlighted the action as Poplar gained a 3527 advantage.

The Wolves struck for six straight points late in the quarter on a drive by Speak Thunder and four points by Wilson. Poplar held a 41-37 lead at the end of the period.
