Poplar Girls Knock Off Glasgow

 

Poplar’s girls’ basketball team came through in the clutch to defeat Glasgow, 5954, in overtime on Friday, Jan. 17.

The visiting Indians trailed 12-11 after the first quarter of the District 2B game, but Poplar struck for the last six points of the second quarter on a steal and layup by Cammie Martell and four points by Bailey Dupree for a 30-18 half-time advantage.

Poplar held a 43-34 lead at the end of the third quarter, but Glasgow gained a 45-45 lead on a drive by Mayzie Yoakam with 3:25 remaining.

The Indians pulled even on a pair of free throws by Braelyn Nordwick with 1:36 left. After Glasgow’s Joely Chappell hit a three-pointer, a drive by Dupree closed the margin to 51-50. A free throw by Nordwick tied the game at 51-51 with 16 seconds remaining in regulation.

Poplar trailed in the overtime period until Martell fired in a three-pointer with 56 seconds left for a 56-54 lead.

After a great save by Martell, Nordwick hit a free throw with 17 seconds left and two more with 11 seconds remaining for a 59-54 victory.

Top scorers for the Indians were Martell with 16, Nordwick with 13 and Dupree with 13. Mattie Ayers and Saydee Archambeault added six points each. Also scoring were Journey Gourneau with three and Toni Brown with two.

Leading the Scotties were Chappell with 19 and Yoakam with 16 points.

Poplar’s boys’ basketball squad lost a tough 45-44 game at Glasgow on Friday, Jan. 17.

The Indians jumped out to a 21-9 lead in the first quarter and held a 29-23 half-time advantage. Blake Lambert scored 12 points for the Indians during the first half.

Poplar trailed 35-33 at the end of the third quarter.

With the game deadlocked at 41-41, the Scotties grabbed the lead on an inside basket by Wyatt Babb with 1:31 remaining.

Poplar went back ahead when Kaniel Ricker hit a three-pointer off the backboard to put the margin at 44-43 with about a minute to play.

Glasgow took the lead to stay on a hoop by Babb with 40 seconds remaining. The Indians missed two shot attempts in the final 20 seconds.

Top scorers for Poplar were Lambert with 15 and Ricker with 10. Also scoring were Dane Moran with nine, Walker Burshia with eight and Keilen Erickson with two.

Leading the Scotties were Babb with 18, Cade Hudyma with 17 and Grady Nielsen with 10 points.
