Poplar Holds Annual Ice Fishing Contest Poplar Holds Annual Ice Fishing Contest

The Poplar River Ice Fishing Contest was held Saturday Feb 1, and participants were very fortunate to have great weather despite the little sprinkle of rain in the morning.

Fishing started off fast with 10 fish weighed in the first half hour. Fishing stayed hot with eight more fish rounding out the first hour of the contest, by the end of the contest there was a total of 30 fish caught, which were the most in the tournament’s history!

Species caught this year were walleye, sauger, perch, pike and ling.

The first-place $3,000 winner was Ashley Wilkening with a 4 pound, 9 ounce ling.

The second-place $2,000 winner was Lanette Leogering with a 3 pound, 10 ounce ling. Finishing out the top three for $1,000 was Francine Boxer with a 2 pound, 1 ounce pike!

This year the tournament also received a donation from the Wolf Point Walleyes for a wee walleye award, which went to Tyler Miller Jr for his walleye weighing 7 ounces, this was $250.
