Lady Wolves Stop Poplar In Home Game


Clutch three-point and free-throw shooting led Wolf Point’s girls’ basketball team to a 68-51 home victory over Poplar to finish the regular season.
The Wolves led by a 2924 half-time margin and increased the gap to 40-27 midway into the third quarter as senior Brenna Blount, who hit a school record of eight three-pointers in the contest, fired in three long shots.
Free throws by Ameliya Doney and Marley Moran put the Wolves ahead 42-31, but Poplar pulled to 42-35 at the end of the third quarter on free throws by Mattie Ayers and Journey Gourneau.
The Wolves started the fourth quarter on a strong note when Keeley Blount-Henderson accounted for a three-point play. Cammie Martell attempted to bring the Indians back with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to cut the margin to 45-40 with 6:55 left.
Blount then came through with another three-pointer at the 5:40 mark. Two free throws by Doney increased the margin to 50-40.
After Poplar’s Bailey Dupree hit a free throw, Blount-Henderson connected on a three-pointer with 4:35 remaining.
A drive by Doney and a nice inside move by Ma’Kenzie Jackson produced a 57-45 lead with 3:15 left.
The Indians kept battling, but another three-pointer by Blount and two free throws by Doney put the margin at 65-48 with only 50 seconds to play.
Blount finished with 25 points while Blount-Henderson had 18 points. Doney added 11 points.
Also scoring were Jackson with seven, Caitlyn Wilson with four, Kashlyn Speak Thunder with two and Moran with one.
Dupree led Poplar with 16 points. Martell and Ashlyn Bull Chief added eight points each. Ayers scored seven points.
Also scoring were Gourneau with six, Makenzie Crawford with four and Jenaeya Moran with two.
The Wolves will open against Glasgow at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the District 2B tournament in Glasgow.
Poplar will face Harlem at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the tournament in Glasgow.
