Bulldogs Edge Froid/Lake In Title Contest

For the first time since 1993, the Bainville Bulldogs are the champions of the District 2C girls’ basketball tournament.

The undefeated Bulldogs used an impressive defensive effort to defeat Froid/Lake, 41-27, in the championship contest held in Sidney on Saturday night. The Bulldogs broke away from a 15-15 deadlock with the final seven points of the first half on a drive by Lila Butikofer, a free throw by Hailey Berwick, a three-pointer from way out by Elsie Wilson and a free toss by Tally Berwick for a 22-15 half-time advantage.

Bainville increased the gap to 28-15 when Wilson, T. Berwick and Butikofer scored to open the third quarter.

The hard-playing Red Hawks fought back with eight unanswered points to end the third quarter on a drive by Isabelle Nordwick, a three-point play by Mara Salvevold and a three-pointer by Joelle Davidson.

Another basket by I. Nordwick pulled the Red Hawks to 32-27 with 6:18 remaining, but Bainville held Froid/Lake scoreless the rest of the way. Four points each by Wilson and Miah Pippenger helped the Bulldogs pull away.

Wilson led Bainville with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Also scoring were Butikofer with eight, Hansen with six, Pippenger with six, T. Berwick with five and H. Berwick with three.

H. Berwick had four steals and two assists.

Leading Froid/Lake’s attack were Salvevold with 14 and I. Nordwick with eight points. Also scoring were Davidson with three and Lilly Johnson with two.

Salvevold grabbed eight rebounds and had five steals.
