Cowboys Move Forward With Win Over Brockton
The Culbertson Cowboys punched their ticket to the Eastern C divisional tournament by beating Brockton, 60-47, at the District 2C tournament on Saturday morning.
Culbertson came out ready to play as the Cowboys broke loose from an early 5-3 game by scoring 15 straight points for a 20-3 lead. A three-point play and a tip-in by Gavin Deen started the outburst. After a steal and drive by Mark Kirkaldie, Deen made a free throw for a 13-3 margin.
Culbertson increased the gap to 18-3 on a drive by Brooks Solem and a three-pointer by Plenny Williams. Another basket by Deen put the margin at 17 points.
A three-pointer by Kirkaldie from way out and four points by Bridger Salvevold increased the score to 27-5 at the end of the opening quarter.
After holding a 37-15 halftime lead, Kirkaldie fired in a three-pointer to give the Cowboys a 46-21 cushion with 4:40 left in the third quarter.
The Warriors, however, got their offensive attack going as a three-pointer by Kameron Rattling Thunder, a three-pointer by Josh Firemoon, and two jumpers by Jarid Fast Horse closed the gap to 46-31.
Deen sank a free throw for a 47-31 score to end the quarter.
Brockton kept the pressure on as Rattling Thunder and Fast Horse hit three-pointers to open the fourth quarter.
Another three-pointer by Rattling Thunder cut the margin to 51-44 with 4:15 to play. The Cowboys then scored the next four points on a basket by Dawson Bergum off a pass from Salvevold and a steal and drive by Solem.
Free throws by Kirkaldie put the Cowboys ahead 58-47 with only a minute remaining.
Top scorers for the Cowboys were Deen with 15, Kirkaldie with 14, Solem with 11 and Salvevold with 10. Also scoring were Williams with five, Bergum with three and Ian Snyder with two.
Kirkaldie finished with 12 rebounds. Bergum and Deen each had three assists.
Leading Brockton were Rattling Thunder with 12 and Fast Horse with 10 points. Rounding out the scoring were Colter Nygard with eight, Firemoon with six, Miles Boxer Jr. with four, First That Walks with three, Ronnie Black Dog with two and Alex BullCalf with two.
First That Walks dished out four assists. Firemoon registered five steals.
