Froid High School senior Mara Salvevold has achieved state honors in sports, Business Professionals of America and music during her high school days.

Salvevold has competed in BPA’s interview event the last two years, and she placed sixth at the state level last year. She explained that the topic includes putting together a cover letter and a resume for a “fake job.” She said that education came in handy when she applied for positions with the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds and the Honker Pit. She started working at the Honker Pit last summer and now helps out there on Sundays during the school year.

“I like to talk to the customers throughout the day,” Salvevold said.

As far as music, she plays the clarinet and has qualified for the state music festival throughout her high school career.

Her singing ability has led her to a spot in the honored choir held in Glasgow for the last three years. She prefers singing to band because “You can do it anywhere” and she likes sharing tunes with her friends. When asked which member of her friendship group has the best voice, “Me obviously,” she joked.

In sports, Salvevold has been a standout for the Froid/Lake Red Hawks. She earned All-State honors in volleyball as a senior and was a second team All-Conference pick in basketball as a junior. She said her favorite sport “depends on the day.”

Highlights of her volleyball career have included playing at the Class C state tournament as a freshman and having an undefeated record in her sophomore season until the divisional tournament.

She says this has been her best basketball season. “I have kind of figured things out,” Salvevold said.

She is a sprinter for the Red Hawks’ track program and enjoys running in the relays.

In the classroom, her favorite subject is math. Her favorite teacher is Kaitlyn Dahlberg. “She always has good advice,” Salvevold said. “She’s closer to our age than some other teachers.”

After high school, Salvevold plans to study psychology probably at Montana State University in Bozeman.

She has always attended school in Froid and ranks in the top three for her class.

“I’ve know everybody here my whole life,” Salvevold said.
